Carl Levin (Democrat, Michigan), appearing on Meet the Press, just doesn't get it. Most pundits don't get it either. I, of course, do. The American automobile industry is in the shit hole, on the verge of bankruptcy, not because there's no 40 MPG. Fuel efficiency is important, but foremost is well designed cars. In 2006 I bought a Dodge Stratus. What a piece of shit. It could get 40 MPG and I'd still not buy it knowing what I know now. Lets stop being coy and be frank: American cars are crap, and until we make overall better cars, improved fuel efficiency and some gimmicky technology gadgets won't save us.
Here's a specific example of what I mean by crappy design. To adjust the time on the radio clock, you need a sharp pin to depress the special set button. WTF, I don't have a sharp pin handy when Day Light Savings ends. Any Toyota or Honda, you just press the button down for 2 seconds. If you can't even design a decent clock radio, forget about designing an overall decent car.
