We were shooting the shit at a friend's 4th BBQ yesterday and he asked us what our golf "goals" were. One buddy said to be a single digit handicap; forgot what the other one said, but something along the line of shooting consistently in the 80s. I would have said something similar two-three months ago, but after my neck injury I'm just happy to be able to play again. Such is life, it's hard to appreciate things until you lose them.
Frankly, prior to my C8 nerve root problem golf was increasingly become less fun and more frustrating because it was all about the score. But since my neck injury I don't even keep score. I have some bad holes, some good holes, and a bunch of OK holes, but all that matters is I'm actually out playing. Golf is fun again. I don't dwell on the bad shots as much, remembering the good ones more.
The ironic thing is I think I'm actually playing better now. Maybe not absolute score wise because unless you play a lot you tend to loose that touch and consistency, but because I'm playing "looser" I feel like I'm overall playing at a better level. Carded one birdie, two if my putt on 14 rolled another inch, a few pars, and a handful of bogeys, which is pretty good for me.
So in some ways my neck injury has been good for me. Sure, I can no longer play Saturday and Sunday every weekend, but when I do play on Saturday once or twice a month I'm enjoying it more, and isn't that what really matters.
